Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi’s 21st century masterpiece is reborn with this stunning black-and-white version, released in Japan in the leadup to Godzilla’s 70th anniversary. A major critical and commercial success that earned seven Japan Academy Prize awards, Shin Godzilla (2016) pays tribute to the monster movie franchise’s origins while reinventing the iconic kaiju within the context of Japan’s political present. Proposed by Anno and overseen by Higuchi, ORTHOchromatic adds new dimensions to the film’s visual impact by rendering it in orthochromatic (“ortho” for short) black-and-white, a type of monochrome characterized by starker contrasts and more pronounced blacks. The results are awe-inspiring and presents Shin Godzilla as never seen before.

Some brave user added this to TMDb TODAY probably bc its US theater premiere is today. So im logging it now before my screening bc i doubt the regime at TMDb will keep it active.
(I added the production info and JP release date from 10/23)
Not sure this needed a black and white version as it’s a modern, present day story. It made sense for Minus One; here it’s more novelty. The b&w does hide some of the CGI but loses some of impact that the color offers.
Also the presentation wasn’t as clean which I don’t know if it was the theater or the movie. I ordered the collectors edition that includes this version so I will be able to evaluate on my OLED.
Movie is still excellent in b&w because the story is so good. That first half is a masterpiece.
