There are so many words that can be applied to HUNGER: haunting, brutal, painful, angering, and, in a way, beautiful.
It’s beautiful because Steve McQueen’s style pulls the eye and you don’t want to look away, as his shots tell so much without a bit of dialogue. It’s haunting and brutal because of the sheer violence that McQueen shows from the prison guards and the emotional violence that the prisoners experience. And it’s angering because of the way the prisoners were treated.
To say Michael Fassbender is outstanding here is an understatement; it’s obvious he put everything he had into the role and left nothing behind. Fassbender is the most promising up and coming actor in Hollywood right now and HUNGER is a cinematic resume of why.
