I feel like I grew up knowing a lot about Conan, but I never saw the movies, nor did I read the Howard books. It was just such a looming prescence in my little nerdy life that I felt it was always just there.
Never having seen CONAN THE BARBARIAN though, it was about what I expected out of an Eighties action fantasy epic: a bit misguided, wooden acting, and not near enough blood. The fact of the matter is, for a supposed barbarian, there’s not a lot of barbarianing going on here. The fights are too few and too far between and a bit weightless (if that makes sense) when they do show up.
Still, I enjoyed the opening scene and when the movie didn’t concern itself with talking so much. And, there are golden moments where you can really see Oliver Stone’s influence. Unfortunately his hand wasn’t heavy enough and so what’s on screen often remains clunky at best.
