Viewing Notes

If you’re looking for all killer little filler, then CHOMESKULL is perfect.

The film picks up where LAID TO REST left off, with Emo Kid Thomas Dekker (he of the perpetual eye liner) on the run or something from the titular killer Chromeskull. But this time it’s not just Chromeskull; it’s Chromeskull and his very own, never-explained slasher Murder Inc. (except without the RICO violations), led by his right hand man, aka Brian Austin Green.

LAID TO REST 2 features some of the most gruesome, realistic kills I’ve ever seen in a horror movie and that’s where the film makes its mark. Director/writer Robert Hall is also onto something with Brian Austin Green; his character and Green himself are great and I wanted more of his character on screen.

Unfortunately the film doesn’t waste much time on character development or exposition or explaining things; it’s kill kill, words, kill kill, run, kill kill, scream, kill, idosyncratic mistake by the killer, kill. It’s frustrating because you never get any explanation of what Chromeskull, Inc. is, you never learn the fate of some characters, and characters make some really dumb mistakes. While Damon argues that some of my issues are in the fine tradition of slashers, I guess I expect them to be smarter in this day and age. That’s not to say that the movie is unwatchable; it’s actually fun and better than I expected for a low budget, direct-to-video release. CHROMESKULL shows some really promising moments for Hall’s career in more than gore effects…if he’ll just put another pair of eyes on the script.
