I admire RUBBER, but I’m not entirely sure I love RUBBER the way it begs me to.
The film is ambitious, gorgeously shot, and sets itself up for something I would normally love; through the first half, it really impressed me and made me laugh. In the second half, though, I found myself bored and feeling like it’s a bit too in love with itself and its “no reason” theme and quirks therein; I felt much the same about I HEART HUCKABEES. The jokes started to feel tired and repetitive and I was ready for the film to roll itself to the conclusion quickly.
Despite my complaints though, I’ll allow that I might like it better on subsequent views, as it’s sticking with me several hours later and has me thinking and rethinking my opinion. There’s a lot to like, but it’s a film that divides, and right now, I’m stuck squarely in the middle.
