Having seen the Cronenberg remake since it was broadcast on USA Network as a child, I had some idea what to expect of the original: man turns into a fly. I expected cheesy effects and a typical schmaltzy 1950s sci-fi horror script and a lot of screaming. All of that was there in spades, but I didn’t expect the real tragedy of it all.
What could’ve been a typical monster B-movie turns out to be a real thinker with great execution. The writer and director managed to make the opening scene incident still have weighty emotional impact when the movie circles back around at the end. Very few modern movies can achieve that, nevermind the old monster B-movies. The tragedy of this movie sticks with you.
