I had a case of I Need a Big Dumb Action Movie and COBRA was the cure. Among Stallone’s prolific Big Dumb Actioners, this one is near the top and it hits all the right notes, with a rebel cop, an army of generic killers, a witty sidekick, over the top violence and cheesy romance.
My favorite sequence is still the opening at the grocery store, when, rather than call in a hostage negotiator, they send in The Cobra, and well that’s that when he blows the guy the damn hell away. There’s also a brief flash of an almost grindhouse feel in the opening that I wish the director had stayed with.
I also loved that Cobra had his own data center at his apartment that had fingerprint analysis and full color mugshots. In 1986.
