Viewing Notes

Maybe not one of Spike Lee’s best, but his films are always worth watching. There are so many good things here.

This adaptation of Kurosawa’s original retains the themes of class and hierarchy, and the resentment of wealth disparity (“All money ain’t good money”). It also adds social media and black culture to the mix.

Denzel Washington is at his best; appearing in almost every scene, he carries the film. He even engages in a rap battle near the end!

The ransom drop sequence on a subway train and through a Puerto Rican celebration is exciting, and I just love that New York itself is a character in the film. The last act is a little unusual and I don’t know if it really works.

I, too, was looking forward to seeing this on the big screen, but it barely played anywhere. Disgraceful marketing/promotion for a Spike Lee/Denzel Washing film. Someone needs to apologize to Spike.
