This movie was so full of revenge and double crosses that it makes soap operas look trite in comparison!
Earlier Shaw Brothers movies tend to focus on the politics of the working class, the peasants, who are wronged by those in power, typically the provincial governor or local magistrate. The Heroic Trio is perhaps the greatest example of that, making the point over and over again at the expense of the peasants, whose wrongful deaths drive it home, over and over again.
The fight choreography is good, with plenty of heroes versus seemingly insurmountable odds battles taking place.
Certainly not my favorite Shaw Brothers martial arts movie, but definitely one worth watching. One of Chang Cheh’s early movies, followed the next year by the classic The One Armed Swordsman.
