Yet another strong performance from Michael Shannon with a great supporting cast, including excellent turns from Winona Ryder, Chris Evans and David Schwimmer.
My only complaint is that the film lingers somewhere in the netherworld between emotional detachment from and involvement in the characters. That’s also something I like about it, in that the filmmakers didn’t try to compel the audience to feel sorry for, or conversely hate, Kuklinski. He’s presented as a murky, multifaceted character, with nuances and subtleties that give him complexity while still not excusing his actions.
On a side note, being without a car, I decided to be adventurous and take the bus from work to the theater, and then bus it home after. The timing didn’t work out so well. Not that I didn’t get home, just that I had to do a lot of waiting, both before and after the film, in order to catch buses. It made for a tedious evening.
Still, I’m glad I made the effort to catch the movie as I suspect it may not stick around in theaters very long, which is unfortunate.
