Most of Jarmusch’s movies are variations on a road movie, the same being true here to a lesser extent. He’s a very visual director and the style of his filmmaking often supercedes the substance of the story being told.
While Only Lovers isn’t the best Jarmusch film, it’s still a fun, visually immersive, and often funny piece of work. The acting is great, especially from Swinton and Yelchin, who is great as Ian, a sort of fixer for Hiddleston’s Adam. Swinton just looks stunning here, fitting in well as part of Jarmusch’s visual repertoire.
My wife and I barely made the screening because I had the time wrong. We hauled ass from Lafayette 20 miles south to Denver to see this at the amazingly beautiful Mayan Theater. I’m happy I finally made a trip to this movie house, which is basically Denver’s Music Box. I know I’ll be seeing more movies here.
