Viewing Notes

We took a drive down to Denver Film Society’s Sie Film Center to renew our memberships and catch a return engagement of Joe. This will probably end up in my top 10 for the year, it was that good. Though I’m not from Mississippi, I am a son of the South (luckily raised in Northern Illinois after my parents escaped the poverty trap of Northeast Arkansas) and have spent enough time there to easily recognize the authenticity of the characters portrayed in Joe. Portrayed to great effect by a trio of actors doing some of their best work, ranging from the older Gary Poulter doing a magnificent turn as G-Dawg, to the young Tye Sheridan, who does more than hold his own. And let’s not forget an excellent performance by Nicolas Cage who does some of his best acting since, I dunno, Leaving Las Vegas maybe?

Beautifully shot and more focused on capturing the nuances of its main characters than in jumping from plot point to plot point, Joe would make a great companion piece to Winter’s Bone, another equally devastating tone poem on the South.

It’s great to see Sheridan turn in another excellent performance after having recently seen him in Mud (where he steals the show). In just these two movies alone, he’s already had the kind of acting career actors three times his age would be lucky to have. I expect continued great things from him over the years to come.
