I think it’s time to admit I don’t consider myself a Wes Craven fan. I’m not particularly fond of the Nightmare series or the Scream franchise though I do truly like The Hills Have Eyes, Deadly Blessing, The Last House on the Left and The Serpent and the Rainbow. He’s always been a mixed bag for me.
No movie could sum that exact feeling up more than The People Under the Stairs. Its sloppy, barely skin deep social commentary is, at times, insulting even for 1991. It incessantly mocks itself, and by extension its audience, throughout undercutting what little horror moments there actually are.
On the other hand, it’s funny and that humor is probably the only thing that raises it above other ‘90s horror fare. This would have been a fun film to watch as a movie night selection. It begs to be enjoyed with a crowd.
