A gorgeously filmed moralistic noir set in Ireland. This film just gets more beautiful with every passing minute. The snow scenes in the final act are breathtaking.
James Mason is great, and even though his character is the center of attention and what most of the movie’s characters revolve around, it’s really the secondary characters that drive the story. Their interactions while trying to help, take advantage of or catch Mason’s Johnny make this such an interesting story.
Kathleen Ryan, as Mason’s love interest, steals the show though. She’s excellent, especially in the final scenes.
The movie does stretch out a bit too long though, which lessens the impact a bit. Still, a great movie and one I’d LOVE to see in 35mm in a theater some day.
