NBPL started their James Mason series this month kicking off with this film that I hadn’t seen. It’s really a great movie where Mason, despite being the center of attention (he’s the chief that orchestrated the robbery and the only one remaining on the loose) he’s really not the center of this film.
The surrounding cast of shady and/or altruistic characters drive the movie as they each try to help this anti-hero. It’s often dark and depressing but also heartwarming in that these people (mostly strangers) try to help Mason’s Johnny McQueen and avoid the law. Excellent on-location settings in Belfast where the snow feels as cold as it looks.
Seems this movie could have been a bit tighter. It runs nearly 2 hours. Some of the impact feels a bit diluted over that long runtime as scenes are unnecessarily stretched. Doesn’t diminish the overall tone.
Apparently this was Kathleen Ryan’s debut (she’s billed last despite being the second most important character in the movie). You wouldn’t know it’s her first feature; she is excellent and makes this one worth viewing even more than James Mason. Highly recommended.
