Not without its moments but really, this is the nadir of Carpenter’s output as a director. This movie feels like it wants to be a cross between THE THING and ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 while never achieving anywhere near the level of performances that Carpenter got on THE THING; or capturing the perfect siege staging of ASSAULT. In fact, this could have been great as a sci-fi reinterpretation of ASSAULT. That would have been fun.
That aside, I really like Clea DuVall’s kinda silent rookie cop performance, mostly in the background, amidst a weird, wacky cast. DuVall also has a great death scene.
