Viewing Notes

If I’ve seen this one before I sure don’t remember. Pretty fun with lots of destruction and great battle scenes between a dead-eyed, meaner Godzilla and Baragon, Mothra and Ghidorah/King Ghidorah.

The suits for the trio of Godzilla’s foes are pretty great, especially Ghidorah and Mothra right after she hatches from her cocoon (she looks terrifying!); but Godzilla’s is dopey as fuck. His legs are splayed way too far apart and his midsection is fat and it just looks weird.

Baragon looks great in this but gets treated like shit and snuffed out before the other creatures even make an appearance. Poor Baragon, got done dirty!

Godzilla is a real asshole in this. And they come up with a weird backstory consisting of him being made up of all the souls (soldiers and civilians, U.S. and Japanese) who perished during World War II. Uhh, OK.

I did love the digs at the U.S. Godzilla film from 1998 however.

Considering Shûsuke Kaneko was coming off the success of his three Gamera films I expected this to be even better than it was. I bet the Japanese audience had mixed reactions to it.
