If you’re expecting to be rescued by Sister Street Fighter, you’re fucked. Every time she’s sent to rescue someone they end up dead! You’re better off not knowing her!
This third installment feels more like it should be the second, as it’s a little more toned down than HANGING BY A THREAD. Same general plot but this time it’s a friend she’s trying to rescue instead of her sister. Same result though. Many of the same actors show up to play many of the same bad/good guys.
Etsuko Shihomi is great throughout all of these films. She does a lot of her own stunt work to largely great effect and she projects a graceful, chaste beauty. The fact that her character is never subjected to any of the crazy sexual stuff that goes on around her, and she’s never played up as a sex symbol is kind of amazing.
Her outfits blend traditional with practical and are never in the least bit revealing. The closest we come to anything remotely sexual with her character is when she’s hanging upside down and being whipped while still fully clothed. The fact that her clothes are never torn or slashed to reveal even the remotest hint of her skin goes against genre conventions which is great.
I think her character remaining a symbol of good and purity juxtaposed against the lurid violence and sex swirling around her goes a long way towards making these films work as well as they do.
