Viewing Notes

Apparently I’d seen this one before but I didn’t remember it at all so I was excited to catch it. It starts off well before veering into some incredibly goofy victorian-era stuff before getting to the moon.

Once on (in) the moon things get more interesting and the main protagonists’ (antagonists really) differing moral codes become more apparent and of greater importance to the plot. Though they differ in their treatment of the alien insects, the outcome is the same. Though it never shouts it, this film has plenty to say about colonization and native peoples.

The insect creatures are a mix of people in costumes (children I’d guess) and stop motion animation. There’s also a very large stop motion insect that’s pretty cool. That, combined with the stylized set design, make the moon sequences pretty interesting to watch.
