Viewing Notes

Started this yesterday but the first third is painfully early ‘80s and cliched as hell, so I paused and picked it back up today. So glad I did because it gets progressively weirder, grosser and funnier as it goes along!

The practical FX are the real reason to watch. And even though a lot of the deaths are mostly off-screen there’s still plenty of fun gore to go around.

When most people think of the ‘80s they’re picturing the mid to late ‘80s in terms of fashion and culture. This movie is a great example of suburban early ‘80s which in many ways is similar to the late ‘70s. Lots of terrible clothing, questionable home decorating and status symbol automobiles combined with plenty of casual racism and sexism.

The fact that the idiot white couple have both a black domestic servant and a Hispanic gardener is just par for the course at the time. Like no one doing the writing, casting or directing gave that a second thought.
