This would have been more shocking, both from the gore standpoint and regarding politics and free speech, when it came out in 1992, but there’s still plenty here to get weak stomachs going.
The political subtext is given life via the excessive use of force by the police in eliciting a confession and their generally unprofessional actions. You can’t help but read that as anxiety about the impending turnover of Hong Kong to China.
Simon Yam is great as the serial killer. This makes me want to see more of his Cat III work, RUN AND KILL specifically, which sounds fucking insane.
