Viewing Notes

Still in love with this movie. I think I first saw it way back when it came out at the Music Box. For me at least, each of the three primary characters represents a part of Hong Kong’s identity crisis: declining British colonialism (Jeremy Irons), traditional China/Hong Kong (Gong Li), and future Hong Kong (Maggie Cheung). I love the cinematography and Cheung’s performance in particular.

This whole movie is uncertainty and uneasiness personified.
