Overview

While staying at an isolated island resort, James and Em are enjoying a perfect vacation of pristine beaches, exceptional staff, and soaking up the sun. But guided by the seductive and mysterious Gabi, they venture outside the resort grounds and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror. A tragic accident leaves them facing a zero tolerance policy for crime: either you’ll be executed, or, if you’re rich enough to afford it, you can watch yourself die instead.

Viewing Notes

I tried to temper my expectations on this going in. I like but don’t love ANTIVIRAL, and I love POSSESSOR. I feel like this falls somewhere in between and that over time this might grow more on me. I think I was expecting a higher peak for the ending but in retrospect I actually like how it all played out. It sets up and then subverts the typical class disparity tropes and certainly doesn’t offer any hope for a brighter future.

Skarsgård turns in a pretty good performance but Mia Goth is fucking terrifying in this for reasons I don’t fully understand. Her character is just… unsettling.
