Viewing Notes

Basically a three-hour-long neurotic episode externalized on screen. This and BABYLON are movies I think will eventually be considered classics (if “classics” exist in the future) but are these amazingly catastrophic commercial failures when they were released. Honestly, I was shocked this was still playing in theaters as I thought for sure I was going to miss it.

The weird thing is my 4pm screening was half full. Yes, it was one of the smaller theaters at AMC but I was still kinda shocked. Hilariously, one couple finally walked out about 20 minutes before the end of the film. The two people sitting in my row exclaimed “what the fuck was that?!” loudly after the film was done. I just don’t understand audiences anymore! Did you NOT know what movie you were going to see? Did you NOT see HEREDITARY or MIDSOMMAR? Did you NOT know the runtime before sitting down? What exactly WERE you expecting? I mean, you have to intentionally avoid seeing GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 at the theaters right now to even choose this movie so…

I did find myself focusing on all the background stuff in many scenes because the production designers went crazy with fake posters, graffiti and products that were humorous and weird. No matter what you think of the movie, holy hell does Patti LuPone deliver an amazing performance as Beau’s mom! Her soliloquy was amazing.
