Viewing Notes

Discovered this film series at the Peoria Riverfront Museum and I needed to get out of the house so I went on my own. This is part of a series called Marc Eliot’s Art of Film based on the American New Wave. Eliot is apparently a guest film curator. He recorded a pre- and post-film video where he talks about the film.

It’s kinda hilarious they named the theater, literally, the Giant Screen Theater. And it is a pretty big screen! There was a good crowd of about 50-60 people, of which I was obviously the youngest. This place reminds me of a cross between Boulder’s Dairy Arts Center and Denver’s Sie Film Center and the audience could best be described as the “wine and farmer’s cheese” crowd. They have aspirations of being pretentious but are too provincial to actually be pretentious. None of that is an insult, it’s just that we’re in central Illinois. It is what it is.

The projection was a little dark. I doubt their projector has quite enough lumens to handle such a large screen. All in all a great experience though.

Next week is YEAR OF THE DRAGON so I’ll probably go see that too. Eliot mentioned it in the post-film recording by saying “I’m sure none of you have seen this film. It’s been completely forgotten and this is probably the only way you can see it.” And hey, probably most of them haven’t seen it so I guess he’s not really wrong. I’m just the weird film buff who just happens to be here.
