Viewing Notes

From my new German box set of Peckinpah westerns from the Plaion label. Great packaging with postcards of the lobby cards for each movie and an extensive booklet (that’s in German).

Mariette Hartley does a great job as the wanna-be-tough-but-actually-just-innocent-and-adorable country girl that tags along with two grizzled old-timers played by Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott, who may or may not be on the same side. Hartley is cute as a button in this.

This plays out in a space between the time-honored conventional westerns that came before it and the neo-westerns of the New American cinema that came after without really belonging in either.
