I’m curious what led to Friedkin directing two made-for-TV spy thrillers back-to-back in the mid-eighties. He did TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. in 1985, this film in 1986, RAMPAGE in 1987 and then this movie’s sequel in 1988, then THE GUARDIAN in 1990. A strange, interesting run of films in his long career.
For a made-for-TV movie this sits around the low end of average, which is crazy for a Friedkin film. Seems obvious he was hamstrung by studio and/or budget constraints and maybe didn’t get to pick his crew. In particular the production design is very washed out and beige.
It’d be great to get a double feature release of these two C.A.T. SQUAD movies by a boutique label. The version on YouTube is decent, but I’d love to see a nicely restored, high quality version of this.
