A semi-biographical account of Yip Man, the first martial arts master to teach the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun. The film focuses on events surrounding Ip that took place in the city of Foshan between the 1930s to 1940s during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Directed by Wilson Yip, the film stars Donnie Yen in the lead role, and features fight choreography by Sammo Hung.

I can’t believe I waited so long to see this movie. Great film, with some absolutely fantastic martial arts action and a good historical story to go along with it.
The only minor setback to me was the obvious “set-like” quality of the, er, sets. You tend to see this a lot in Hong Kong period pieces, so it’s not much of a distraction, and, in fact, the set pieces are like big pieces of art, visually fascinating in their own right.
Can’t wait to watch Ip Man 2 now!
