Things defies categorization. A lowest of low budget, z-grade Canuxploitation film, shot on super 8 with only a vague adherence to a plot line, Things is a movie that has to be seen to be believed. To appreciate it fully, it’s best to watch in a group, as we did.
The music, overdubbed dialogue, and weird environmental sounds all combine to create an odd “soundtrack” that reminded me of Crash Worship at times; not so much musically, but just in the feel of it. I’d love to get an MP3 of just the audio from this movie, it’s that bizarre.
Porn star Amber Lynn also makes an appearance as a news reporter, clearly reporting out of someone’s basement “news room”, her scenes cut into the rest of the movie at odd, jarring intervals. Though it’s not entirely clear, this is apparently supposed to be footage that’s playing on a television in the home where almost the entire movie takes place.
Alone this movie would be a tedious chore and a ‘WTF did I just watch’ movie; in a group it’s a tedious but hilarious ‘WTF did I just watch movie’!
If you’re into weird trash cinema like I and my friends are, Things is definitely worth tracking down for the experience, but be warned, it’s not a good experience!
