Viewing Notes

This has been my bedtime / can’t sleep at 2am fix over the course of a few nights via Amazon Prime on my iPhone. Maybe 25 minutes at a time. No, not ideal but also not the kind of film that might be hurt by this viewing method. And honestly being able to process in chapters has made me think about this a lot more. Firstly, the execution is a train wreck. But the actors here give it their all. And it’s a studded cast of characters incl. Henriksen, Ferrer, Ford, Huston, Peckinpah, Winters, et al.

The imagery and the concepts are excellent; I’m a big fan of the heaven versus hell story esp. told in new and creative ways. Yet this movie is so convoluted in its attempt I wasn’t sure what was going on until it approached the end. The poor execution does lend to the mystery elements. The atmosphere is particularly unnerving. I know for a fact if I had seen this at the time of its release in 1980, I would have shit my pants. Those fucking birds, the funhouse mirrors, the dimly lit modern home, the Pong game on the big screen. This film has some really nice touches. It’s unfortunate that there’s little holding it together but I still admire what they were trying to do.

(I may watch it again, properly.)
