Hmm, feels like a sequel for a sequel’s sake. Possibly a “we had more story to tell with this detective so here it is” product. Which is to say this is a lesser film than first that really feels like a sidestory to the first film. The stakes are lower and the cat and mouse chase isn’t all that interesting.
Ekin Cheng is more like an annoyance than a real crook. The more I think about it this story may have worked better as part of the previous film like Ekin Cheng is the buzzing fly getting in the way of the true story with real stakes. And Ekin is no Andy Lau.
Knowing this going in rather on the other side might have made for a better watch. As it was this was a tad tedious. If not for a few stylish flourishes from Johnnie To I’d give this a lower rating. The bicycle “fight” won’t go down as his best but it’s definitely something you haven’t seen elsewhere.

I’ve seen plenty of low-speed “chases” in movies before but that bicycle chase/duel is perhaps the silliest.
