Viewing Notes

For my Godzilla 60th Anniversary project. Watching the movies in order is very interesting. I’m noting things I had not picked up on in the past. This movie is the first true sequel which occurs right after Mothra vs Godzilla. Even has the same Professor Muira. Yuriko Hoshi also returns as a reporter instead of a photographer.

The events in the movie acknowledge the birth of the two baby Mothra larvas from the previous movie (one is called to assist in the takedown of Ghidorah). For many years I considered this my favorite Godzilla movie because I love Ghidorah so much. I still love it but it’s crazy that he doesn’t appear until the 54 minute mark. Basically 2/3 into the movie.

I love love love Mothra talking to Godzilla and Rodan to convince them to team up against Ghidorah. However, Godzilla’s line “I don’t care about the humans because they are always bullying me” is a bit rich. One thing that holds this back for me was the costume update with the Googly eyes on both Rodan and Godzilla. So silly and distracting.

The drama building with the possessed princess and Takashi Shimura having another significant role I really enjoy. Just odd to have the movie conclude with that open ending. Still an entertaining movie with a great battle between four monsters. Baby Mothra riding on Rodan is the best thing here.
