Took me long enough but there it is. It’s as deeply moving and melancholy as I expected. Was hoping to see this first in the theater but having missed the most recent Wong Kar-wai retrospective a Film Center I knew it would be a while before the opportunity would present itself again.
At the moment I would still place Chungking Express at the top but I still need to see several more films. This would definitely be the second spot behind it and could overtake it on repeat viewings, esp. if I do see it projected some day. Truly a beautiful film shot in such close quarters where everything feels claustrophobic and intimate at the same time.
Hard to believe this was released in 2000 because it really possesses an older aesthetic quality besides being a period film of the early 60s. Both Maggie and Tony look perfectly handsome and glamorous. Beautiful film.
