Viewing Notes

Haven’t seen this since viewing in the theater on its original release 12 years ago. Been wanting to revisit and glad to have the DVD set gifted to me from Pat. I believe I enjoyed this more on that first viewing since it’s rather cinematic and often beautiful as you might expect with Tezuka’s fabulous future world and character designs.

On this viewing the CG mixed with cell animation is more distracting especially in the final sequence. Just doesn’t hold up very well (I didn’t care for it 12 years ago but now I really dislike it). Also it’s more apparent that this story would be better told in a series rather than condensed into a feature film. It often feels like pieces are missing that would improve the storytelling.

Still a fun watch and the finale is heartbreaking.
