An actor named Kosuke plays the role of Iemon in a stage version of Yotsuya Kaiden and his new lover Miyuki plays Oiwa. However, as they delve deeper into their respective performances, the line between fantasy and reality becomes obscured until the murderous, vengeful themes of the play bleed into their own relationship.

Third film on Day 5 at FF2014. Great to see Miike reserved in this dual layered story that follows both actors and characters of a stage play as their paths intertwine. Deliberately slow most of the time, this story blends the performance of the lovelorn period piece with the discontented drama of the actors. So incredibly textured that it bleeds culture and tradition. Quite literally. Even subdued, Miike provides plenty of expression. One of my top 5 films seen at the festival.
