Viewing Notes

Been wanting to revisit for a long time and finally placed on my Childhood Movies Project. Since it was in the horror section on Prime I fired it up. Not sure when the last time I saw this but it’s been a long time (at least 10+ years). Weird to rewatch now and note how effective some of the scenes and shots are… things I would’ve overlooked in the past.

For example, the slow steady shot over the girls both in the opening and during PE class are so good. These really establish this feeling of how this period in time, no pun intended, can feel like the longest time in our lives, esp. for those that are routinely bullied. That’s just one reading. I just like how these scenes punctuate the film.

Another thing I noticed more on this viewing is the weird music choice in the score. It goes from serious to light almost comical. The tone is odd almost like HS sex comedy to HS horror mashed up. Not crazy about this. With all the “Silent” dialogue scenes I’d like to view a score-less version of this. Those silent dialogue scenes are so excellent.

The moment when Carrie walks out of the gymnasium is one of the greatest shots in cinema.
