Viewing Notes

Neat to see a non-action, non-fantasy Tsui Hark flick for a change. He definitely has a knack for it if he can get a better handle on his storytelling and editing. This movie is super fun and breezy with super attractive people but it’s also 30 minutes too long. Definitely wears out its welcome in that final 30 minutes too. It could’ve ended at 90 minutes and been fine.

Really like Kwai Lun-Mei here as she’s kinda the odd girl out of the three in that her story isn’t as closely tied to the other two women and I wanted more of her here. Of course Kitty Zhang is beautiful af and portrayed that way here (she was a great villain in MERMAID). I wonder she’s not become a bigger star as I’m sure there’s a good reason in HK film reason for that. Zhou Xun is really the central character here and she’s terrific as expected.

If I didn’t know I certainly wouldn’t have guessed Hark directed this but it’s cool to see his usual film techniques in a rom-com. Very sweet movie just wish it was tighter.
