Viewing Notes

Decided to revisit this since my InterLoan has it and I’ve been on a Gwei Lunmei kick this year after seeing her in WILD GOOSE LAKE. It’s been just over 4 years since I last viewed this yet nothing in this movie I recalled. I can’t explain it and it’s definitely a movie I enjoyed but wow I was very shocked on this viewing that this felt like a first time watch. And given that this movie is in Mandarin w/English subtitles you really have to watch it to understand everything so maybe I have some weird brain damage.

Anyways, this is a super fun yet super silly slapsticky romantic comedy w/three gorgeous women in different places in their (love) lives. Zhou Xun opens the movie as being this genius doctor but introverted w/a social disorder where she freezes if she’s touched by a man. She goes on to invent and experiment w/pheromones to get men to like her and fall in love. Next up is Kitty Zhang who is the CEO of a successful company and oh btw she’s super hot and men fawn all over her so she can’t find a man who is a true love and to love her beyond her beauty, yet she’s vain as hell so huh? Lastly is Gwei Lunmei who is a boxer/musician who sees an apparition of her childhood love and will not accept another man.

It’s all very strange and yet humorous that any one of these women should or would have relationship issues but that’s the premise. Their paths cross and they become entangled so the main comedy beats can play out. Of course since I forgot everything about this premise I also forgot that Eddie Peng and Stephen Fung are both in this as major characters.

The entire thing is very slight but it’s entertaining to see Tsui Hark take a swing at a rom-com w/his style of filmmaking. Plus it’s a joy to watch these three women chew up the screen and interact. If this movie were available on Blu I’d get it.
