Half way into the movie first time viewing the bluray. Can’t recall the last time I watched this in its entirety but it’s been a while. There a many things I like about this and many things I do not like. Overall it’s still entertaining despite the overuse of CG, poor dialogue, and plot issues.
Like: the opening chase sequence with the Jedi and Zam Wesell. The CG here is appropriate. However it seems like this would have been the perfect opportunity for Jango Fett to take out Senator Amidala since the two Jedi are now removed from the scene. Not a very smart Bounty Hunter.
Dislike: Anakin comes off like such a creep in all his advances towards Padme. The reality is that she’d be turned off by that because it’s so creepy. Also much of their acting during this “courtship” is so wooden. There’s no good sense of time passing from they first reunite to when she declares her “deep love” for him. This romance all seems so rushed.
Like: Camino is great even though it’s all CG. The internal setpieces are nice but the external shots are video game quality. But I do like Obi Wan’s arrival and meeting with the Prime Minister there. The fight with Jango is a bit silly because it’s so obviously a sound stage green screen set.
Dislike: R2 and especially C3PO, who serves no purpose in this movie other than fan service / comedy relief. It’s so annoying to see all the abilities R2 has like the flying and whatnot that never appears in the OG trilogy. I don’t mind the robot factory sequence on Genosis but it could’ve easily been done without having the droids there.
Like: the arena battle is fun although stupid that they would even go through the effort to have this public execution so poorly executed. Why and for whom? Do the Genosians even give a shit about these three people to this extent? Why not just execute them in the back chambers and be done with it. Of course this is shoddy plotting to set up the arrival of the Jedi army then the clone troopers.
Dislike: the final fight with Count Dooku. All it is just done badly with Anakin rushing in then Obi Wan solo fighting until Yoda arrives. And Yoda could’ve tossed that falling pillar into Dooku’s ship to prevent him from leaving but that wouldn’t satisfy the plot. And of course the clone ship arrives just as Dooku takes off and no one follows him back to Coruscant?
Like: the score is excellent. Obi Wan is great and the the real hero of the prequels. He has the best lines and gets the best action scenes. I’d love to see a movie of just him doing investigative work around the galaxy. Natalie Portman is second best here and makes the most out of that awful dialogue. She has attitude, looks great and is convincing in her action scenes… except that last bit where she’s out cold on the desert sand then bounces up. Kit Fisto is my third favorite and I wish he was given more choice scenes because he’s so fun to watch.
Final dislikes: the obvious CG clone troopers which look like the video game. Made worse when they could’ve just had someone in the armor but chose not to. Jango Fett just isn’t that good and looks dumb when he has his helmet off for the execution. Why?? Rose Byrne should’ve been given more to do than sit or stand around. Shmi dying soon after Anakin finds her is silly. All the times Anakin says “Obi Wan is gonna kill me” in jest is lousy foreshadowing. The movie is too long. At least a solid 20-30 minutes could’ve been trimmed to make it tighter (cut all the dumb droid stuff). Hayden not being a good actor is severely felt in every scene with better actors. The uneven CG which really looks dated now. Compare to Star Wars which still looks great because it was all built sets.
Anyways, enough on this. Good to revisit but still disappointing for what could have been.
