King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne by factions within his own country as well as without. Using powers reserved to Wakandan kings, T’Challa assumes the Black Panther mantle to join with ex-girlfriend Nakia, the queen-mother, his princess-kid sister, members of the Dora Milaje (the Wakandan ‘special forces’) and an American secret agent, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

Great to see this at Cinemark Melrose Park with a packed largely POC audience. Was actually surprised how rapt everyone was (quiet) during most of the film. Altho I’m not entirely sold on everything that takes place, the onscreen representation still gets me emotional. It’s powerful for that and having such excellent women in major roles.
FWIW I love the casino sequence even if it’s more routine Marvel movie. I like the geography of it and how it was crafted. Subsequent car chase is fine. Still not crazy about the wonky CG and the final battle. One thing that I picked up on this viewing is when T’Challa first visits his father in the dream sequence and his father lastly says “it’s hard to be a good person and king” (something to that effect) foreshadowing the reveal of his misdeed as king.
