Day 2 of Yuriko Hoshi week on DKU-TV (formerly TKU-TV)
First of the double feature of drama films directed by Mikio Naruse and starring Hideki Takamine, who is like the queen of Japanese melodrama. She is exquisite with such classical features and perfect in this role as a bar manager and mistress. Yuriko Hoshi is the daughter in the story and doesn’t get much to do until the very end and she’s great.
The alt-title “Poignant Story” is more appropriate as this is a painful and sad story but executed so well and esp. Takamine’s performance as she’s in nearly every scene. Nice small appearances by Kumi Mizuno and Tatsuya Nakadai.
