Viewing Notes

This was the second feature tonight on DKUTV for Yuriko Hoshi week and one I watched last year for a Mikio Naruse night. Decided to watch it again because it really is such a great melodrama with Hideko Takamine’s plight central to the story. She wants out of her affair as a professor’s mistress but can’t get a fair resolution. It’s quite tragic. Gotta give props to Naruse for crafting films about women dealing with women’s issues.

I like Kumi Mizuno here even if she’s a bit of a snake. Always wild to see Tatsuya Nakadai as a mild-mannered gentleman in a suit esp. after viewing him as a ragged, stoic samurai. Hoshi is really great in her supporting role as the daughter caught in middle. I love her relationship with her younger brother.

This is such a quality movie that belongs in Criterion. Shame we don’t have access to it or most of Naruse’s other films.
