Viewing Notes

Day 2 of Yuriko Hoshi tribute week on DKU-TV (formerly TKU-TV)

The second film in the Mikio Naruse double feature of drama films led once again by an excellent performance by Hideki Takamine (I really need to see more her films… and Naruse films, for that matter). Story centers around a family living in Tokyo with a bunch of daughters looking for marriage. Yuriko Hoshi is one of the daughters and quite sublime and feisty in this small role. Things get initially disrupted when a couple visits from Kyushu but the other shoe drops when a mysterious son re-appears (Akira Takarada in a wonderfully against type role).

Melodrama abounds as the family is shaken and attempts to stabilize until more misfortune occurs. Terrific film and filmmaking with a stellar cast.
