DKUTV had scheduled “A Woman’s Life” for this evening in celebration of Yuriko Hoshi (her birthday week), which I hadn’t seen. However, when this movie started up I was like, “oh this is familiar!” Sure enough it is The Wiser Age, another film by Mikio Naruse and one I viewed last year via DKU. Guess they had a mix-up in the file selection for the broadcast.
Even I’ve seen this I just decided to continue viewing because it really is great with terrific performances across the board. Love Yuriko Hoshi as the feisty daughter and Akira Takarada playing the slimeball too slick for his own good car salesman. The melodrama is palpable throughout anchored by Hideko Takamine. She’s so damn good.
If Mikio Naruse’s films ever get a release again I would be all over it. It’s a crime his films are no longer available for home video.
Instant thought: if I had the means/access I’d love to start a streaming channel for all these hard-to-find/obscure Asian films. It’s really sad that there are so many significant films and directors that we cannot see through any normal method. And there are a shitload of these films and not all are available on the gray market.
