Finally rec’d this DVD from my library network after months on hold. Didn’t realize this was so sought after. Was inspired to watch this bc Discotek recently released the Blu. I bet it looks great given how beautiful this anthology is with so many (nine!) talented artist directors involved.
Hidetoshi Ômori, with his short DEPRIVE, is my favorite here. Love that animation style and it’s basically like 80s heavy metal punk (Joe Hisaishi does the score for the entire film and it’s wonderful). Katsuhiro Otomo does the wrap-around and it’s great.
This is the dvd you put in in the bar and people watch and wonder wtf it is. So wild and weird at times. Kinda like the stuff you’d find on NightFlight. Hard to believe this got a theatrical run in the USA back in 1991. I’d love to see this on the big screen.
UPDATE: fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck figures the day I get the DVD from the library and watch it, the movie appears on Prime. What an amazing add for that platform. I’ll probably watch it again on Amazon to check the transfer.
