Fuck yes! Totally a throwback to 90s DTV action flicks in all the best ways and proudly wears it on its sleeve like a badge of honor. Loved seeing this in a packed theater and I had an ear to ear grin the entire time.
There is nothing here action-wise that will outdo THE RAID films or Ong Bak or a spectrum of other action / martial arts films. What makes this film fun is really the cast and the match-ups. Want to see Iko versus Tiger Chen? Great! Or Tony Jaa versus Adkins? Yep! Michael Jai White versus Iko?? Oh yeah. That’s fun. Could the fights be better shot and staged? For sure. But it all goes back to the aesthetic of a 90s action flick. Only thing missing were replays and slo-mo. But it does have some illogical plot points that I was like, “really?? okay fine. you want to be dopey as hell like a 90s flick!”
I love that Scott Adkins is as good doing the Hero role as he is doing the bad guy. He even addresses this during the interviews after the film. He also talks a lot about finally getting to work w/Tony Jaa. It nearly brought me to tears listening to him. Then Michael Jai White goes on about working with Iko and striking up a friendship that got me emotional. Love the passion these guys have for each other and working on this film.
Oh Tony Jaa is really funny in this movie! I hope we get more of these super casts together in more films. Kinda like what Timo was doing w/NIGHT COMES FOR US. Just get better fight choreographers and shoot that shit well.
