Viewing Notes

Not nearly as warm or charming as the first film. I believe this is due to having these older versions of the kids, who had great camaraderie and friendship; the kind of summer I would experience, who as adults have grown apart and no longer have that bond. Plus they’re adults. And it’s set in the present so it lacks the throwback nostalgia bug. I don’t think this movie earns its runtime.

This sequel is perfectly fine and serviceable to the source material. I was just kind of sitting there with no real peaks or valleys. The adventure aspect I enjoyed as well as whenever they flashback to them as kids. I’ve seen many have a problem with that, saying it’s jarring to bounce back but I dug it b/c I dig those versions of the characters.

There are a few tearful moments that got me. I thought Hader and Ransone were stellar and the most fun to watch. tbh McAvoy and Chastain didn’t do much for me. When they flashed back to their kid versions I was like, “yeah dammit these kids have personality and attitude” which was missing from their adult versions. Chastain was a big disappointment since her kid version (Sophia Lillis) has that girl power thing and is a strong character. None of that is present in Chastain’s performance. Not blaming her b/c I’m sure it was story choice that she’s become submissive and weak, grown away from who she was but ugh not a fan of that portrayal.

SPOILER STUFF

why does Richie (Hader) have to throw up twice???? Bleh

The S/O to THE THING that everyone was talking about on my TL I expected to be something subtle and not so fucking obvious as the spider head and line of dialogue. Like during that scene I’m thinking, “this isn’t what people are going nuts about… right?” It’s so on the nose.

How the hell is that old bicycle in working order sitting in that antique shop for 25+ years or whatever (wish there was at least a line like “let’s take it in the back and get it fixed up!” Also why the fuck have they not razed all these old buildings and whatnot. I can sorta buy the old apartment where Bev lived still standing but that old fucking house???? That was an old fucking house in the first movie 27 years ago and in present day in a decent neighborhood it still hasn’t been torn down?! That’s bullshit.

I’m sure it’s all about the mystery and weird phenomena of the town Derry but I have a harder time believing that house hasn’t been torn down more than the fantastical evil clown.

Overall I think this movie makes the previous film that much better. Not sure when I’ll make to the time to watch all 3 hours of this again but maybe I will b/c I do like some aspects of it quite a lot. And I love that Ben grew up to be a handsome dude. Wish they gave him more to do and made him not so thirsty over Bev for all these years.

That reminded me: Ben’s flashback to the time during the summer when they all split up as kids after a big fight, he’s in school??? Makes no sense when the rest of the flashbacks are from that summer 27 years ago.
