Welp I’m a dummy bc I always thought this was probably a bad movie so in my viewing of DreamWorks animation back catalog I’ve routinely skipped this. tbh it just never looked very good from the trailers and whatnot that I’ve seen. Picked it up from the library bc I saw that Brad Pitt was in this (voice work) when I was reviewing actors on MovieLogr. So I was curious and my library had the blu.
Firstly, if I didn’t know it was Pitt as MetroMan I wouldn’t have guessed him. Maybe bc I don’t think he’s done a lot of animated flicks? He does a good job not sounding like himself ‘cept for a few lines here and there. I also didn’t recognize Tina Fey at all. Will Ferrell in the titular role was obvious from the start. I did recognize JK Simmons for the few lines he has and Jonah Hill is obvious.
Anyways, this is a really good movie! I was super sleepy but the movie pulled me and kept me awake. Smart writing and direction w/a good story that’s a non-direct take on the Batman/Joker complex of each needing each other. Or maybe it’s direct but handled in way that feels fresh. Had I known that was the storyline I may have watched this sooner. I didn’t even know it was a superhero flick.
The animation is p good too. Surprised that other than the short film sequel (also on the blu) that there hasn’t been a sequel. Feel like there’s a lot to be mined from this world/story. The featurette w/the actors is nice but oddly no shots or interview w/Pitt. Guessing he didn’t agree to that in his contract which is disappointing. And even tho Fey is interviewed there aren’t any shots of her doing her dialogue takes but does have David Cross, Ferrell and Hill giving line reads.
Anyways, this is a solid flick and I’d probably watch it again and/or own the Blu if I found it cheap.
