Overview

A team of space marines known as the Rapid Response Tactical Squad, led by Sarge, is sent to a science facility on Mars after somebody reports a security breach. There, they learn that the alert came after a test subject, a mass murderer purposefully injected with alien DNA, broke free and began killing people. Dr. Grimm, who is related to team member Reaper, informs them all that the chromosome can mutate humans into monsters—and is highly infectious.

Viewing Notes

So I wanted to revisit this when it popped back up b/c it was on Instawatch. But when I finally remembered it was already off NWI. So my library network didn’t have the blu so I just got the special edition DVD. Ugh. That DVD looks terrible. So dark with ghosting issues that even adjusting my TV settings didn’t help that much. But it was watchable.

Not quite as bad as my theatrical experience seeing the movie when I mostly disliked it. Still not very good but I did appreciate the cast more (this before The Rock was as huge as he is now and Rosamund Pike was still new). Fun to see them all interact. Some nice goopy FX and general sense of tension. Main issues still there are the story as it gets so bizarre with The Rock flipping out (before he’s infected) which is such a jarring character change. The biggest issue for me however is the geography of this place and the arc and how these places are linked. So confusing when jump from place to place that I’m never sure where they are at unless it’s in the medical bay. Wish that aspect was clear.

Overall an amusing film and I actually liked the first person shooter POV this time around.
