Happy birthday, Godzilla!
お誕生日おめでとうございます! ゴジラ!
This big dumb dopey movie still makes me smile. I chose to view this installment since I’ve seen plenty of Honda/Fukuda godzilla movies this year and last year. Of course I could watch any one of those again b/c I love them. Anyways this one I’ve seen the fewest (twice since logging here) and the last time was for Godzilla’s 60th Anniversary… this year it’s his 65th! So I was due for a revisit even tho it doesn’t seem like 5 years since my last viewing.
Weirdly I think I’ve seen Don Frye twice at G-Fest during that span and same with Akira Takarada (Twice at G-fest and once in Tokyo). Fun to watch them here having a ball playing these characters tho clearly Don Frye cannot act he can still pull off the grizzled old ship captain, which I hadn’t realized until now that he’s essentially the portraying the captain from ROBOTECH, at least in his look.
I really do like Kitamura’s films and admire how he really tried to do something different w/the franchise even if it doesn’t always work. But at least Toho let him go batshit with it thus making it one of the craziest films in the series, which is saying something. I understand why ppl hate this movie but damn it’s entertaining to me. Even tho I don’t like this Godzilla suit, I’m a fan of dragging out the rogue’s gallery for video game style battle to the final boss. And it’s all done like pro-wrestling! The Mothra/Godzilla tag team is so great I wish they had done more with it.
